Post Codes Received on 25/09/14 and 26/09/14: Very Small Achievement Completed!

Hello! First of all, sorry for not updating the blog yesterday, but I have been very busy with university. I've been thinking of not doing these updates every day but every few days; I'll see how I go...

Anyway! Here are the post codes I received yesterday and today:

France 13013 - Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
Germany 10623 - Berlin, Berlin, Berlin
Germany 71577 - Großerlach, Rems-Murr-Kreis, Baden-Württemberg
Hungary 7747 - Belvárdgyula, Baranya
Spain 15220 - Bertamiráns, Ames, La Coruña, Galicia
Spain 15570 - Narón, Narón, La Coruña, Galicia
Sweden  35253 - Växjö, Växjö, Kronoberg
United States 10597 - Waccabuc, Westchester, New York
United States 44310 - Akron, Summit, Ohio
United States 85054 - Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona
United States 96822 - Honolulu, Honolulu, Hawaii

All of the countries got new subdivisions too!
-Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur for France, making the count 6/27 regions.
-Berlin for Germany, making the count 5/16 states.
-Baranya for Hungary, making the count 1/20 counties.
-Galicia for Spain, making the count 2/17 autonomous communities.
-Kronoberg for Sweden, making the count 3/21 counties.
-And 3 new states for USA! Arizona, Hawaii and Ohio, making the count 21/50.

Also, I gotta note that we got post codes from Galicia Autonomous Region, Spain Twice!... and both from La Coruña Province as well... How I love these coincidences, I find randomness very interesting when things like these happen :) And I noticed we got a palindrome postal code: "35253".

Finally, we got a small achievement... since Berlin is the only District in the state of Berlin in Germany... well, we have every district of the state of Berlin! Yay! This was an exciting couple of days for the Project. :)

Post Codes Received on 24/09/14: 100th Post Codes!

Before giving today's post codes, I'd like to announce that we've completed a great achievement... I've received over 100 postal codes on Fling today! The 100th postal code was 6400 Denmark, pertaining to Sønderborg in the Sønderborg municipality, Syddanmark region.

Now, to the rest of today's received post codes...
Australia 3550 - Bendigo, City of Greater Bendigo LGA, Victoria
Belgium 8000 - Bruges, Bruges arrondissement, West Flanders province, Flemish Region
Denmark 6400 - Sønderborg, Sønderborg municipality, Syddanmark region
Finland 02760 - Espoo, Espoo municipality, Greater Helsinki sub-region, Uusimaa region
United States 07078 - Short Hills, Essex county, New Jersey state
United States 51501 - Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie county, Iowa state
United States 75040 - Garland, Dallas county, Texas

In Belgium we got a new province, West Flanders, which makes the count 4/10 and 4/5 in the Flemish Region. For some reason, all of the postal codes I've received from Belgium have been from the Flemish Region... We also got a new region in Finland, Uusimaa (what's with Finnish doubling all their vowels?), making the count 2/19. And finally, we got 2 new states for USA, New Jersey and Iowa! which means the map has 18 out of 50 states.

Post Codes Received on 23/09/14: New country in the map! :)

Today's received post codes were:
France 94170 - Le Perreux-sur-Marne, Val-de-Marne Department, Île-de-France Region
Hungary 9025 - Győr, Győr District, Győr-Moson-Sopron County
United Kingdom ME12 1DX - Sheerness, Kent County, England

Yay! Hungary! New country! Now there are 23 countries in the map, 14 of which are in Europe. And now that I think about it, we only got postal codes from Europe today... maybe that happens often, I guess I'll pay more attention to it from now on.

Additionally, we got a new county in England, Kent county, bringing the count to 11 out of 85. We're getting there! :)

P.S.: I started placing cities and country subdivisions next the daily postcodes for those who don't check the tables, and so that it's easier to see what's new.

Post Codes Received on 21/09/14: Two new countries!!

These are the postal codes I received today:
Finland 33580
France 21850
Germany 35716
Singapore 760828
Sweden 13467
USA 49422

You may notice that we got TWO NEW countries! Welcome to the map Finland and Singapore! Having Finland means all the 3 Nordic countries are now in the map, the others being Norway and Sweden.

We also got a new state in USA, Michigan, making the count 16/50 states; a new region in France, Burgundy, making the count 5/27 regions; and a new county in Sweden, Stockholm, making the count 2/21 counties.

Now, the first thing that caught my attention was Singapore's postal code system... How can such a small country have 6 digits postal codes? I searched for information about it and it turns out Singapore uses a different postal codes for each building in the country! Do you guys know any other country that does this? You can leave a comment about it below.

An Introduction to the "Game"

Hello everyone! My name is Eduardo, and I'm from Venezuela. First of all, I'm going to tell you what this blog will be about. On September 1st I started sending Flings asking for people for their postal codes and countries so that I could make a map containing random people's locations. Because of some people's curiosity, I've decided to post my progress in a blog so that I could share it with everyone. Here is a bit of a better explanation:

Fling is an app that let's you send 140 character messages (like Twitter), a picture that can contain a caption (like Snapchat), or a 6 second long video (like Vine) to up to 50 completely random people in the world. Also, when you receive a Fling, you can reply to the person who sent it and so start a conversation. Now, what I do is send a message asking people to give me their postal code and country, and if they decide to give it to me I add it to the map, then I research about the place and put some information such as county/municipality, state/province/region in a tab.

Why do I do this? This is a question you're probably asking yourself, and my answer is simple... It's fun! :) I've always loved filling maps or completing achievements in games, the feeling of progression has always been very satisfactory to me, and some people agree with me.
I got inspired by a site called Where's George, in which people write the serial code of their banknotes, spend it, and if someone receives it and enter it on the website, you can track the places where the banknote has been. I found it really interesting how people made maps, filling them with the counties where their banknotes have been, filling the states, countries, ZIP codes, etc... However, I can't do this since I don't live in the United States, so I tried to think about some fun way of me being able to fill a map randomly, and that's when my girlfriend read about this app, showed it to me and I thought of what I could do with it.

Also, I've made an about page explaining all of this a bit better, a page including the rules I'm following to do this and a page where you can see the map, as well as some tables and achievements.

Now, so far it's been 3 weeks since I started, so I'll talk to you a bit about my progress so far:
-I've received postal codes from every single continent as of September 18th, the last continent being Asia, and the postal code being sent from India.
-So far, I've received 85 postal codes from 20 different countries!
-Over half of these postal codes have been sent from USA, UK and Australia.
-Almost 5% of these have been sent from San Diego County in California, USA... (Nice people, huh? :D )
-The most beautiful place I've been sent a postal code from is in Queenstown, New Zealand... Seriously guys, Google it!

I hope this blog will be fun for you guys and that you enjoy checking through my progress :)

Also, here's a link to the map, and to tables and achievements.
